The reality? Ransomware doesn’t just lock up your files. It stops your business cold. Phones go silent. Invoices can’t be sent. Staff can’t log in. You’re locked out of your own livelihood, watching helplessly as the attackers demand payment in Bitcoin.
And worse still — paying the ransom doesn’t guarantee you’ll get your data back.

Recently, several Australian businesses have faced devastating ransomware attacks. In one case, a regional council was paralysed for weeks. Essential systems, including payroll and water management, were frozen by cybercriminals. The ransom note gave them 72 hours to pay — or lose everything.
How did it happen? A single staff member clicked on what looked like a routine invoice email. That one click installed malicious code that quietly spread across the network, encrypting files before anyone noticed.
Why does this matter? Because this story isn’t rare anymore. Attackers use automation to scan the internet for open doors — outdated firewalls, weak passwords, unpatched servers. Once they’re in, they move fast. And they don’t care if you’re a small business or a large enterprise.
Take Action:
- Back up your data, and make sure those backups are tested and stored offsite. A backup that doesn’t restore is just a false sense of security.
- Enable multi-factor authentication on every account possible.
- Keep systems and software updated. Patching closes the very holes attackers exploit.
And finally — train your team. Most ransomware attacks start with a human click.
Let’s look at another real-world example. A local manufacturer in Queensland was hit by a ransomware variant called LockBit. Their production line stopped for five days, costing them hundreds of thousands of dollars. The attack came through a remote desktop connection left open without proper security controls.
Why it matters? Remote work has expanded our attack surface. If your team connects into your network from home, it’s critical to use secure VPNs, enforce MFA, and restrict administrative privileges.
